New Bedford and Marshfield Police Back Diehl
PLYMOUTH, MA—Today State Representative Geoff Diehl, the Republican nominee for U.S. Senate, announced the official backing of New Bedford and Marshfield Police Unions prior to addressing the Massachusetts Police Association (MPA) gathering in Plymouth. The MPA represents 22,000 uniformed officers throughout Massachusetts and is among the 16 law enforcement organizations publicly backing Diehl.
Geoff Diehl “refused to bow to the mob mentality of painting all law enforcement groups with the same broad brush of resentment and anger,” wrote President Hank Turgeon in the official endorsement communication. “The New Bedford Police Union is proud to endorse and support your candidacy for the U.S. Senate.”
“The Association of Marshfield Police (Union) voted unanimously to endorse you in the upcoming U.S. Senate race,” wrote Robert Reidy, the association president.
The endorsements, which arrive on the heels of the Massachusetts Coalition of Police demonstrate the most police backing a statewide candidate for public office has ever received.
“From day one of serving in public life, I’ve witnessed the challenges facing the men and women in blue,” said Representative Diehl, who first served on the Whitman Finance Committee. “We saw the impacts of reduced funding for law enforcement and I’ve vowed to fight everyday moving forward to advocate for our first responders—because they’re here for us.”
Diehl has now surpassed former U.S. Senator Scott Brown in the number of law enforcement agencies supporting his candidacy and has more police associations and agencies backing him than former Governor Deval Patrick, former candidate Martha Coakley, and Governor Charlie Baker combined. The total support represents over 20,000 law enforcement personnel including:
- Boston Police Patrolmen’s Association
- Boston Police Superior Officers Federation
- Everett Police Patrolmen’s Local 94
- Everett Police Superior Officers Local 95
- The Association of Marshfield Police
- New Bedford Police Union
- Weymouth Police Superior Officers
- Whitman Police Association IBPO Local 509
- Worcester Police Patrolmen Local 911
- Norfolk County Correction Officers
- Plymouth County Correction Officers
- Massachusetts Police Association
- Massachusetts Municipal Police Coalition
- New England Benevolent Police Association
- Massachusetts Coalition of Police (an AFL-CIO affiliate)
- Immigration and Customs Enforcement Council Local 207
Yesterday Diehl asked once again for Warren to apologize for her comments calling the entire criminal justice system racist from “front to back.”
Diehl won the State Primary by 29 points and has also earned the endorsements from: Sheriffs Tom Hodgson, Lew Evangelidis, James Cummings, and Joe McDonald as well as Representatives David DeCoste, Marc Lombardo, Jim Lyons, Shaunna O’Connell, Lenny Mirra, and Peter Durant; Weymouth Mayor Bob Hedlund, former New England Patriots Fred Smerlas, Steve Grogan, and Matt Light, Red Sox Champion Curt Schilling, comedian Lenny Clark and broadcaster John Dennis, to name a few. He has also received endorsements from former Governor’s Councilor David Constantine (D-New Bedford) and Former Mayor and State Representative Bob Correia (D-Fall River).
